'He has a real feel for the lyric'
Sir Michael Parkinson
By R C Sherriff
Operation Michael was a major German military offensive during the first world war and began the Spring Offensive at dawn on 21st March 1918. It was designed to separate the British and French forces and capture the ports supplying the allied troops, bringing the war to an end. The offensive moved so quickly that the Germans could not re-ammunition the fast-moving front line and it failed. It is recognised as the battle that started the end of the war.
R.C. Sherriff’s powerful play is set in an officer dugout on the front line at St. Quentin, northern France, and opens as the new company is moving in to start its tour of duty on the night of Monday 18th March 1918. It explores the relationship between men dealing with the stresses and strains of war in their own ways. The company officers are a mix of public school boys and men promoted through the ranks.
First shown at The Apollo Theatre London, in December 1928, an unknown Laurence Olivier starred in the role of Captain Stanhope. It was aimed at a female audience, to explain what the men had experienced and were reluctant to talk about after the war. With a new film released on 2nd February 2018, the play is being promoted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1.
As the play is studied for GCSE English Literature, a discount is offered to school’s subject to terms and conditions.

"The Barrelhouse Blues Band is back at the Exchange with some familiar faces and some you may not know. 2018 marks 10 years since Paul Hart, who started the Barrelhouse Orchestra back in 2003 died, so we are remembering him and the musical impact he had on the town. Since his passing a group of us has kept his passion alive with a changing line-up of highly regarded musicians. As Paul did, we’ve always tried to keep local musicians who knew and worked with him involved in the band and like him, we are keen to ring the changes to ensure a varied and exciting evening and to give you something a bit different each time.
Some of the stars that Paul introduced to us in the Barrelhouse big band blues events range from Howey Casey (Paul McCartney, Wings), Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones), Andy Sheppard, Pete Brown (Cream songwriter), John Etheridge and Johnny Mars to name just a few. One of the strengths of the Barrelhouse are the names you’ve never heard of before who turn out to be amazing performers such as John Kenzey who appeared at the last Barrelhouse gig in 2016. Be prepared for some new faces who will turn out to be aces!
A great mixture of rock & roll, rockabilly and blues from Chuck Berry to Peter Green and Imelda May."

The Mill on the Floss
By George Eliot
Adapted by Helen Edmundson, Directed by Paul Clarkson
“They had entered the thorny wilderness, and the golden gates of their childhood had for ever closed behind them.”
In this fluid and visceral re-imagining, Helen Edmundson (Queen Anne, Coram Boy, The Heresy of Love) turns George Eliot's unforgettable story of first love, sibling rivalry and regret into a wonderfully theatrical examination of the psyche of one of classic literature’s most charismatic heroines.
Brought up at Dorlcote Mill, Maggie Tulliver worships her brother Tom and is desperate to win the approval of her parents, but her passionate, wayward nature and her fierce intelligence bring her into constant conflict with her family. As she reaches adulthood, the clash between their expectations and her desires is painfully played out as she finds herself torn between her relationships with three very different men: her proud and stubborn brother Tom; hunchbacked Phillip Wakem, the son of her family's worst enemy; and the charismatic yet dangerous Stephen Guest.
With its poignant portrayal of sibling relationships, The Mill on the Floss is considered George Eliot's most autobiographical novel and here Edmundson loses none of its breadth, whilst beautifully examining the complex nature of relationships and love. This production tours Dorset with Artsreach, the counties touring arts charity.
‘With rare theatrical vibrancy, Helen Edmundson’s free adaptation distils the essence of George Eliot’s feminist novel’ – Evening Standard
‘…not only re-invents the novel, but pushes the boat out theatrically way beyond its usual moorings…' The Guardian
‘An intensely moving dramatisation – stylised, but free of empty theatrics’. The Times
